Lavrov began his visit, which coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, by laying a wreath at the martyr’s shrine in the capital, a Russian television channel reported.

Later in the day, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, received the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov. Lavrov stressed that strengthening bilateral cooperation will be the focus of the intergovernmental committee meeting to be held in Algeria soon, and that his country is ready to offer more scholarships to Algerian students.

“All these years we have actively developed trade and economic cooperation,” Lavrov said, according to a Foreign Ministry statement. “Given the rapid development of relations between the two countries, and in order to maintain a high level of interaction, the two sides plan to conclude a new strategic document that reflects the new quality of our relations,” he added. . In the same vein, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs also mentioned discussions about “cooperation with Algeria in the military and technical fields. »

During the meeting the issue of Mali was also discussed, Sergei Lavrov, said in this regard that “the imposition of sanctions on the current leaders in Mali is exaggerated”. Adding on this subject that “the Algiers agreement of 2015 is the basis of a political solution in Mali”.

Finally, Serguei Lavrov also said that various international issues were discussed, including the work of OPEC +.
