CAF Awards 2022: ESS and 2 Algerian players nominated, Belmadi absent

Unsurprisingly, Riyad Mahrez is nominated for the best African player of the year. Ditto for Riyad Benayad and his club ESS, respectively for the interclub player and the club of the year. On the other hand, the name of Djamel Belmadi does not appear on the list of nominees for the African coach of the year.

The African Football Confederation has unveiled the lists of nominees for the CAF Awards-2022. A stakeholder panel consisting of technical experts, CAF legends and journalists decided on the list of different categories, taking into account the performance of the candidate from September 2021 to June 2022 at all levels.

Riyad Mahrez is, unsurprisingly, nominated for the best African player of the year. He was the author of an exceptional season, at the end of which he was crowned champion of England with Manchester City. Indeed, his statistics are impressive. In 47 games played in all competitions, he scored 24 goals and provided 9 assists. It remains a serious claim for the consecration of the African body.

His national teammate Riyad Benayad is also nominated for the best African interclub player of the year. The 26-year-old striker had a remarkable season with ESS. The latter is also selected for the best African club of the year. It is not a surprise following his excellent run in the last edition of the African Champions League, reaching the semi-finals.

Belmadi absent, it’s not a surprise

Djamel Belmadi’s name is not on the list of nominees for the best African coach of the year. This is not a surprise following the elimination of the national team from the 1st round of the last CAN but also for the next World Cup.

Ditto for the national team of Algeria. She is not nominated for the best African selection of the year. It was predictable after the two big disappointments at the start of 2022. It is also worth mentioning the absence of an Algerian for the best young African player.

It should be noted that the CAF awards-2022 ceremony will be held on July 21 in the Moroccan city, Rabat. The winners of each category will be decided by a jury composed of the CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, head coaches and captains of member associations and clubs involved in the group stage of the interclub competitions.
