Corruption: towards a new case for Haddad and Saïd Bouteflika

The legal cases linked to Algerian businessmen and politicians are experiencing many twists and turns. Ali Haddad and Said Bouteflika whose cases are still on trial return to court with something new in their cases.

With regard to Ali Haddad, the Algerian businessman and business leader, the investigating judge seized the court of Sidi M’hamed to discuss money laundering, concealment and corruption and schedule the trial in the coming days. The dossier issued includes facts related to the electoral campaign dedicated to the fifth term of the deceased former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, which preceded the Hirak and the series of demonstrations that began in February 2019.

The accused meanwhile defended himself as well as he could. Indeed, according to the revelations he made during his interrogation with the investigating judge, he would have received a call from the brother of the said president: Saïd Bouteflika. He would have asked him to seize certain equipment from the television channel “Dzair TV” in favor of the channel “Istimraria TV” in order to support the electoral campaign of Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Said Bouteflika denies the facts before the judge

Saïd Bouteflika, brother of the former president of the Algerian republic, denied the facts during his appearance before the examining magistrate. He rejected the veracity of the facts related to his involvement in this corruption affair as well as any link with Ali Haddad.

In addition, former Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal was present as a witness. He said he knew nothing about the involvement of Said Bouteflika and Ali Haddad in this affair. Sellal also confirmed to the judge that he was Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s presidential campaign manager, following his appointment by Said Bouteflika. He had only begun the organizational aspects and financial management was not granted to him.

Amara Benyounes, former minister of industry also appeared as a witness in his capacity as head of the liaison committee during the same election campaign. He underlined the fact that his functions were limited and were: communication and the organization of rallies in the Kabyle region of the country.
Like Sellal, Amara also denied having knowledge of this file.
