New twists animate the case of the Gambian Bakary Gassama, referee who officiated the Algeria-Cameroon return match on March 29, as part of the play-offs for the qualification for the Qatar-2022 World Cup. Indeed, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) received a first response from the Arbitration Commission of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) following the appeal lodged challenging Gassama’s arbitration. After this ambiguous response, did the FAF withdraw its complaint?
“… We have taken careful note of the elements of your letter and we can already guarantee that all the incidents that occurred during the match have been carefully examined by the two “video” referees, in accordance with the Laws of the Game. and the protocol for video assistance to arbitration”, such was the response of the FIFA Arbitration Committee to the appeal brought by the FAF to denounce the scandalous arbitration of the Gambian Gassama.
Because of its ambiguity, this answer provoked strong reactions on social networks, between those who interpreted it as a rejection of Algeria’s request to replay the match, and those who believe that it is only an acknowledgment of receipt and that the request is being processed, given that FIFA highlighted “incidents that occurred during the Algeria-Cameroon meeting”.
Believing that Algeria’s complaint has been rejected, the French press agency RMC Sports indicated, through a tweet posted this Saturday afternoon, that “the FAF withdrew its complaint to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee and preferred to settle for an explanation from the Arbitration Committee concerning the decisions taken by Baray Gassama”.
However, according to information reported by the Arabic media Ennahar Online, the FAF would have reacted differently following receipt of this response. Indeed, “the FAF would have sent a new correspondence to FIFA in order to have clarifications about the said answer, and this, because of the lack of clarity in the press release received and which does not give an explicit answer to the request of Algeria,” the same media reported.
According to information from RMC Sport, the FAF withdrew its complaint to the disciplinary committee of the world body, and preferred to settle for an explanation from the arbitration committee concerning the decisions taken by Bakary Gassama.

Algeria’s appeal to FIFA: the FAF receives a response
In a press release published yesterday evening on its social networks, the FAF announced that FIFA responded to the complaint lodged with its Arbitration Commission, contesting the arbitration of Bakary Gassama during the return match Algeria-Cameroon. “We regret that, according to your assessment, the decisions of the referees could have negatively influenced the course of the meeting”, replied FIFA.
It should be recalled that the FAF had officially lodged an appeal with FIFA on March 31, in order to contest the scandalous arbitration of the Gambian Bakary Gassama who had officiated the return match Algeria-Cameroon, within the framework of the play-offs for the qualification for the next Qatar-2022 World Cup.
