If today several countries in the world have decided to lighten their restrictive measures to start the summer period in style, the wearing of the mask was also not far from being eliminated.
Indeed, on Wednesday May 12, 2022, the Minister of Health in France Olivier Véran announced the abolition of the compulsory wearing of masks in public means of transport from Monday May 16. Thus, the government withdraws one of the last provisions in force on French territory in the face of the Covid-19 epidemic. This includes, in particular, the metro, bus, train, plane and taxis.
“Wearing a mask remains recommended but is no longer compulsory”, he explained, considering that this obligation was “no longer appropriate” at a time when the current wave of Covid-19 is declining sharply in the country. The number of infections and hospitalizations is now falling sharply, although scientists point out that the epidemic is probably not yet over, in particular because of the risk of a new variant emerging.
A reduction in the health protocol capable of satisfying tourism professionals
As of Monday, May 16, 2022, travel is no longer stigmatized as much as other activities. Nevertheless, wearing a mask remains recommended and people at risk can wear them as they wish.
At the end of two years of pandemic and restrictive measures, it is certain that the means of protection will remain well anchored in habits and will remain present in public transport. “The end of wearing a mask will apply to metros, trains, buses, planes and taxis. Regarding air, this decision concerns the national territory so for medium and long-haul flights, it depends on the rules of the countries and companies concerned, “said the French authorities. It will therefore be advisable to be well informed before packing your suitcase.
The mask begins its disappearance by plane
Britain and Scandinavia now allow travel without a mask, subject to the rules applicable at the final destination. This is particularly the case in the United States, whose wearing of masks has been abandoned since April 19, 2022.
Indeed, from this date, wearing a mask has become optional on public transport. American Airlines, Alaska, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Southwest as well as United immediately benefited from the removal of this measure.
In Europe, we are still far from this generalization, but it is likely that we are tending towards it. The United Kingdom is the most advanced. British Airways, Easyjet and Virgin Atlantic have eliminated the wearing of a mask for destinations which have also abolished it.
Similarly, Icelandair applies a selective policy according to each country. SAS Scandinavian Airlines was also among the first to eliminate the obligation to wear a mask in the three Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway and Sweden).
For its part, Air Algérie will continue to require the wearing of masks for its travelers on its flights, as long as the Algerian government has not announced anything on this subject.
