Riyad Mahrez and Manchester City have been eliminated from the European Champions League after losing the second leg of the semi-final against Real Madrid by a score of three goals to one at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Real was able to turn the tide at the Citizens and will therefore host the final of the prestigious European competition with Liverpool on May 28 in Paris.
By winning the first leg with a score of four goals to three, Manchester City was close than ever to validating its qualifying ticket for the European Champions League final at the expense of Real Madrid in the second leg which was played at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. In a very tight match marked by great physical commitment, the Citizens manage to open the scoring at 73′, signed Riyad Mahrez.
When everyone expected Man City to qualify, Real managed to turn the tide on their opponent. Indeed, Rodrygo manages to set the record straight by scoring a double in just two minutes 90′ and 90+1′. In a tie (5-5), the two teams will go to extra time to decide.
Dominating long and wide overtime, the people of Madrid stun the Citizens, scoring the third goal through Benzema on penalty 95 ‘.
A well-deserved qualification for Real Madrid. The current season’s Spanish La Liga holders will face Liverpool FC in the European Champions League final on May 25 in Paris for a “remake” of the 2018 final.
Another disappointment for Mahrez
Aligned among the starting lineup, Riyad Mahrez did not show great things, being a striker closely watched by Real defenders. But he was able to take advantage of every opportunity to score the goal that allowed his team to take the lead.
Unfortunately, the captain of the national team did not go to the end of the meeting, having been replaced by Fernandinho just after his goal for purely tactical reasons from the philosopher Pep Guardiola. His exit influenced, it must be said, the performance of the attack of the Citizens. Admittedly, he did not shine during the match, but his presence on the pitch bothered the Madrid defenders too much.
Our international will therefore not go to the final. A second disappointment for the player in the space of a month after the elimination of the national team from the next World Cup in Qatar.
