Temmar trial: new conviction against Haddad and Fares Sellal

For almost 3 years now, the trials against former officials and businessmen of the Bouteflika era, one of these former officials has followed one another. The former Minister of Housing and former wali of the wilaya of Mostaganem, Abdelwahid Temmar, whose trial took place during the month of March 2022.

Indeed, the trial of the former wali of the wilaya of Mostaganem, Abdelwahid Temmar, continued at the economic and financial criminal center of the court of Sidi M’hamed in Algiers for his involvement in the case of the granting of Undue advantages for the benefit of several businessmen, among them Ali Haddad and Tarek Noah Kouninef but also former state officials like Fares Sellal the son of former Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal.

It is today Thursday March 31, 2022, that the verdict fell, the judge of the economic and financial penal pole of Sidi M’hamed pronounced a sentence of 6 years of prison and 300,000 dinars of fine against the former Minister of Housing, Abdelwahid Temmar, the latter will also be deprived of the right to appear in the case of real estate cases in the wilaya of Mostaganem.

Haddad, Fares Sellal and Noah Kouninef sentenced to 3 years in prison

He also sentenced businessmen Tarek Noah Kouninef, Ali Haddad, Abdelmalek Sahraoui and Fares Sellal to three years in prison, together with a fine of 100,000 dinars.

The court acquitted the former director of the state residence, Hamid Melzi, while the sentences handed down by the economic and financial criminal judge against the rest of the defendants varied between two and three years in prison.

History of the Temmar trial

It should be recalled that in his pleadings, the Public Prosecutor stressed that the case involving the former wali and minister Abdelwahid Temmar concerned “state property and people’s money”, and that the latter was prosecuted for “squandering agricultural land and illegally granting lots of industrial, tourist and agricultural land”, specifying, in the same wake, that “tangible evidence supports these accusations and reflects a flagrant violation of the laws of the Republic”.

It should also be recalled that the only witness in this case, a woman with the initials OF, caused all the defendants involved in this case to sink, bringing them to justice following her testimony and her statements before the competent authorities.

The Public Prosecutor at the economic and financial penal pole of the court of Sidi M’hamed (Algiers) had requested a sentence of ten (10) years in prison against the former wali of Mostaganem, Abdelwahid Temmar, accompanied by a fine of one (1) million dinars as well as the privatization of the right to stand as a candidate for a period of five (5) years.
