The head of Spanish diplomacy reacts to Tebboune’s remarks

In recent weeks, relations between Algeria and Spain have been marked by a diplomatic crisis, following the “sudden” change in Madrid’s position on the Western Sahara issue. The publication of a press release by the Spanish government on Friday March 18, 2022, in which it publicly supported the Moroccan autonomy project for Western Sahara, caused Algeria to react, which recalled its ambassador to Madrid, the March 19th.

This Saturday, April 23, 2022, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during the latter’s meeting with the national press, was questioned about these relations between Algeria and Spain. Tebboune did not hesitate to criticize the decision of the President of the Spanish government Pedro Sanchez, considering that the latter is “ethnically and historically unacceptable”.

The Algerian head of state, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, also recalled that Algeria has “very strong ties” with the Spanish state, assuring that it “will not renounce its commitment to supply Spain with gas , whatever the circumstances.

Spanish Foreign Minister reacts to Tebboune’s remarks

Today, Monday April 25, 2022, the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, reacted during an interview with the Spanish media Onda Ceroen referring to “a sterile policy” and affirming that the decision taken by the Spanish government, is “sovereign and under international law”.

Of all that has been said by the Algerian President, the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, underlined that there remains “the total guarantee of the supply of Algerian gas to Spain and the scrupulous respect of the contracts that companies have”, and that the dialogue between the Spanish and Algerian government is still relevant.
